Dresden Not Happy With Garbage Pickup

Dresden, Tenn.—Dresden residents—and Mayor Jeff Washburn—are not happy with the state of garbage pickup there. With last week’s ice and snow storm, garbage collection was delayed and has not yet been caught up.
In a Facebook post, Mayor Washburn was stern in his reaction to the problem. He noted that representatives of Republic Waste have been summoned to the February Dresden Board of Mayor and Aldermen to discuss the situation.
He said, “Dresden residents, it does not appear that Republic Waste was truthful on Monday when they promised to run a truck in Dresden on Tuesday to pick up garbage that was not picked up last week. A representative of the company promised and confirmed by email that there would be garbage pick-up on Tuesday; scheduled recycling pick-up on Wednesday, and then regular garbage pick-up for this week on Thursday.
This is not the first time that Republic has not timely collected waste in recent weeks and I promise you that I, as Mayor, and members of the city board are not happy about this situation. I have requested that representatives of Republic attend the February regular meeting of the Dresden Board of Mayor and Aldermen regarding the companies failure to collect waste. I will also be instructing our finance director to make a pro-rata deduction of our monthly payment to Republic for the missed week. The monthly payment to Republic is normally more than $32,000. Republic has to understand that there is a cost for failure to provide service set out under the contract and their non-performance will result in the City of Dresden refusal to pay for the services that were not provided.
Republic will likely state that the weather conditions prevented them from picking up in Dresden. The fact is, however, that Republic did pick-up in some of their other contracted cities at the end of last week; just not in Dresden.
It is sad that this company that Dresden has had a long and trustworthy relationship has evolved into a company that cannot any longer be depended upon to provide reliable service and be truthful in regard to their promises.”
