Fort Donelson Reopens Today

Dover, Tenn.–Fort Donelson National Battlefield will reopen to visitors at 8 a.m. today, Friday, January 19, after two back-to-back winter storms necessitated closure for a week.
It is intended that roads to the battlefield also be accessible, with the popular Lower River Battery loop possibly remaining closed pending remaining ice.
For visitor information and orientation, Fort Donelson rangers will be duty stationed at the park’s historic Dover Hotel, also known as the “Surrender House.” Located 101 Petty Street, basic orientation and an interpretive video will be available.
Those needing specific directions may call rangers at 931-232-5706, or utilize the 101 Petty Street address via map or GPS. The Dover Hotel will be open from 8:00a.m. until 4:30p.m., standard operating hours of the normal location for such services.
The Stewart County Visitor Center remains extremely ice covered and hazardous as of Thursday night and will remain closed until notice from Stewart County.
Lands and interpretive facilities of the Fort Heiman Unit, located in Calloway County, Kentucky, will remain closed due to remaining snow and ice. Roads of that unit are not owned or maintained by the National Park Service, and travel on the primitive roads would not be advised.
