Paris, Tenn.—As expected, it was a very big day for the Helping Hand Radio Auction today. With yesterday’s weather cancellation, today’s auction combined Security Bank and White and Associates with all the other local banks: Commercial Bank and Trust, Foundation Bank, Regions Bank, First Bank and Carroll Bank and Trust.

In all, some 370 items were donated today, making for 36 slates that continued throughout the day and ran an hour longer than the usual 5 p.m. closing time. A large crowd was on hand at the Henry County Fairgrounds for bidding—and watching.

Volunteer Susan Hayes said, “We actually couldn’t get to all the items that were donated today. We have 20 items left over for tomorrow.”

All told, $15,973 was raised Wednesday, with items going for high bids. For example, a plate of chocolate oatmeal cookies made by Cassandra Perry was bought for $350 by Commercial Bank.

The grand total raised so far is now $40,786.

Today’s items represented a wide spectrum, from homemade baked goodies such as chocolate meringue pie, mini pecan pies and baked caramel cheese puffs to homemade creations such as wind chimes and clay bowls.

With all of today’s items, it took two auctioneers, Ray Compton and Fred McLean. “Despite the weather today, it’s been a great day,” Compton said.

Thursday should be another big day, with items donated by the Oakland community, Junior Livestock, W.G. Rhea Library, Lee School Association, and Latter Day Saints.

Friday’s items will be donated by the Clifty community and Clifty Village, Rescue Squad, Dialysis Clinic, and Relay for Life.
Saturday’s items are donated by the Whitlock community and Whitlock Fire Department.

The Helping Hand Radio Auction is broadcast daily on WTPR AM 710 beginning at 12:30 p.m., and on Saturdays at noon. Auction phone is 644 1695.
