Tennessee Unemployment Remains Low

 
Nashville, Tenn.– Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced unemployment rates in November remained low across the state and the vast majority of Tennessee counties continue to experience rates below 5 percent.
 
However, in our area, four counties are on the state’s top ten list of highest unemployment.
 
Houston County is ranked 92nd highest unemployment in the state, with 5.3 percent unemployment; followed by Benton County ranked 90th highest, with 5.2 percent; Lake County ranked 89th with 5.0 percent and Stewart County ranked 88th, also with 5.0 percent.
 
Of those, Lake County posted the biggest jump, moving from 3.7 percent unemployment in October to 5.0 percent in November.
 
In our area, only Weakley County showed a decrease and it also posted the lowest unemployment, with 4.1 percent, down from 4.6 percent in October.
 
Henry County is at 4.2 percent unemployment, up from 4 percent; Obion County is at 4.8 percent, up from 4.6 percent; Carroll County is at 4.6 percent, up from 4.4 percent.
 
Davidson and Williamson counties tied for having the lowest unemployment in the state with rates of 2.5 percent, a slight increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to October.
 
Eight of the ten lowest county unemployment rates in November were in Middle Tennessee, with Knox and Sevier counties in East Tennessee rounding out the list of the top ten lowest rates in the state. All counties in the top ten had a rate below 3 percent and unemployment rates in 87 Tennessee counties remained under 5 percent in November.
 
Tennessee’s statewide unemployment rate in November was 3.1 percent – two percentage points lower than it was in November 2016 and one percentage point lower than the national rate.
