By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director

New Johnsonville, Tenn.—A suspect is in custody in the Benton County Jail following a double-homicide today near New Johnsonville.

Speaking from the scene Sunday afternoon, Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher told WENK/WTPR that the bodies of two adult females were found in a home on Hwy. 70E this morning. “We’re still trying to identify the bodies for sure,” Christopher said.

The suspect’s name is being withheld until the bodies are identified, he said.

The two women died of gunshot wounds inside the residence. “We believe they are a mother and daughter,” Christopher said.

The suspect was arrested in Humphreys County this morning “even before we knew we had a double-homicide,” Christopher said. “We’re still trying to put all of this together. We’re not sure of the motive right now.”

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene around 9:30 a.m. “and we believe it had just happened a few minutes before that.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is on the scene and the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office and Waverly Police Department assisted in the apprehension of the suspect. The Humphreys County SO was on the scene of the murders part of the day.
