“Heartstrings” Builds Relationships Through Music

Paris, Tenn.–If this doesn’t pull at your “heartstrings”, we don’t know what will.
Paris Special School District’s Strings Teacher Mrs. Gioia Fizzini, along with Mary Phoenix and Penny Holmes, have developed the program “Heartstrings” that enables students in CDC to be mainstreamed into the strings class and learn alongside them while using an “Adaptive Music Kit” as well as enabling devices. The project has been made possible by Plus Endowment, with a William Atchison Grant.

This is a community and relationship building project more than anything else in its aspiration. “Inclusion” is a word that is used a lot in special education, but rarely are “mainstream” students developing emotional connections with the CDC students that happen to join their classrooms over a long period of time.

Class time on the “Heartstrings” days will provide small group relationship building for the entire 50 minute period. Teachers hope that this program will create friendships between students of diverse needs.
