Original John W. Crockett Tombstone Restored

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Paris, Tenn.—The Henry County Cemetery Committee has restored the original tombstone for John W. Crockett—former Congressman and son of the legendary David Crockett—at Paris City Cemetery.

For years, the original stone for Crockett has been in pieces, but was recently fused together and replaced in its location at the Crockett family plot at the historic city cemetery.
The original stone now stands just behind a newer gravestone that had been erected for Crockett by the local Crockett family descendants a few years ago.
Susan Stewart, who spearheads the cemetery restoration project, said the original tombstone was restored by Brent and Marty Brauer of Greenfield and Luke Barlic of Paris, who also have been restoring other old stones at city cemetery.
Stewart said the Crockett tombstone was pinned and glued together with stainless steel and placed on a new base. Members of the committee cleaned the stone over the weekend.
Crockett is buried at city cemetery with several other members of the Crockett family.
John W. Crockett was born in 1807 and died in 1852 at the age of 45. He was born in East Tennessee to David Crockett and his first wife Polly.
John Crockett began his law practice in Paris and married Martha Hamilton, with whom he had 14 children. He held numerous state and local offices, including the Congressional Seat that had been held by his father. John Crockett also had been a newspaper editor.
