Benton County, Tenn.—Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher has confirmed to WENK/WTPR that the death of a man whose body was pulled from the Tennessee River yesterday is being investigated as a homicide.
Speaking from the scene this morning, Christopher said, “It is being investigated as a homicide.”
Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation also told us that they are assisting with the investigation.
According to the TBI, “At the request of the District Attorney General, TBI agents responded to assist local law enforcement on a death investigation related to the body recovered from the Tennessee River by the Benton County Sheriff’s Department.”
The victim has not yet been identified publicly, but he is a white male who appears to be in his 30s, Christopher said.
The body was found by fishermen when it was snagged on their trotline around 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Christopher said markings on the body have led to the conclusion that foul play was involved.
The body was found in the Tennessee River near the Benton and Humphreys County line. The body has been sent to Nashville for autopsy.
