Murray, Ky.—The city of Murray has issued an updated public notice explaining today’s boil water order for the Murray Water System which includes all customers of the Murray Water System including the water districts and customers of South 641 (Hazel), District 2, and Dexter/Almo Heights.
Meanwhile, Calloway County Schools and the Murray Independent School District will not be in session Friday, as the boil water order continues.
In the updated notice, the city of Murray reports that the Murray Water System detected an increased turbidity (clarity) reading this morning, consulted with the Kentucky Division of Water, and issued the boil water order as a precaution until results of sample tests that will be conducted throughout the system are received back from the lab. The Murray Water System anticipates having these results back Friday evening or Saturday morning.
At this time, the Murray Water System suspects the turbidity issue was a result of two incidents that occurred late Wednesday afternoon. The first is from vibration near the clear well and the second was a penetration of a 30 inch water main. Both occurred while contractors were performing construction activities for system upgrades that were taking place in the vicinity of the Water Plant.
The Murray Water System advises water customers to follow the procedure below while under the boil water order:
Due to the possibility of unsafe water, you are directed to immediately start BOILING ALL DRINKING WATER taken from the public water system. This includes water for drinking, making ice cubes, washing foods, brushing teeth, or any other activity involving consumption of water.
Water should be brought to a full, rolling boil for at least 5 minutes to ensure it is safe for consumption. Boiled water may be stored at room temperature or refrigerated in a closed container until needed.
This order shall remain in effect until further notice.
Updates regarding timelines will be provided as more information becomes available.
