Paris, Tenn.—At Henry County High School Monday, Faith Umstead and Emilee Smith, two of the six HCHS students to attend TTI (TN Teen Institute) over the summer break, shared some of their experiences with members of the Henry County Prevention Coalition members. HCPC covered the cost of attending the week long leadership camp at UT Martin. The students told advisory board members about the workshops and lectures that focused on topics related to teen issues such as driver safety, suicide prevention, tobacco, alcohol and drug use.
Students are challenged to implement activities in their community which target issues they feel are a concern among their peers. To date, they have formed a Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter called Patriots In Action S.A.D.D. and have promoted National Suicide Prevention month with a poster campaign and a video shown during high school classes. In recognition of National Teen Driver Safety Week, the Patriots in Action S.A.D.D. chapter will be participating in the S.A.D.D. Rock the Belt campaign, October 23-27 on both HCHS and Grove campuses. Some of the activities are Chalk the Walk, morning announcements, TV factoids, Seat Belt “Fasten” Show, Living Seat Belt around Grove Tower, and Seat Belt Pledge Drives. They are also hosting a district wide poster contest for all elementary students.
Future events include presenting TN Teens Talk Tobacco to 6th grade students on November 9 and promoting the Great American Smokeout on November 16. For more information contact Coordinated School Health, Stephanie Winders or Jennifer McFarland at 642-9733.
