Paris, Tenn.–Children and adults are invited to celebrate the new Little Free Library at the Atkins-Porter Rec Center with a ribbon cutting and refreshments at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 21.
As WENK/WTPR reported earlier, the Atkins-Porter Neighborhood Association is sponsoring both the library and the event. The Atkins-Porter Rec Center is on the corner of Walnut and South Highland in the heart of the A.P. Neighborhood.
The Little Free Library was suggested by former Board Member Sara Simonis, who loved the idea of her neighbors having access to books 24/7. “With the gymnasium and the dog park and all of the children, it just seemed like a perfect fit,” she said. “As soon as it was installed, the sturdy, adorable, bright red library was immediately filled with books for all ages by neighbors and other interested parties.” To keep that effort going, Simonis encouraged those attending the event to bring books, especially children’s books for the library.
The Atkins-Porter Association had plenty of help with the project from interested individuals and businesses including the City of Paris, Wolfgang Rackl Masonry, Sherwin-Williams Paint Store, Roof-Repair Professionals of Camden, Wynn’s Custom Cabinets, Tayloe and Hancock Glass, Marc Roach, River Byrd, Ed and Vickey Roberts, and Susan Jones.
The structure is being registered at FreeLittleLibrary.org, and will join more than 50,000 little libraries in 70 countries on the site’s worldwide map.
