Big Sandy, Tenn.— Mike McMillan volunteered all day at the Big Sandy Christian Outreach Center and prayed for the family of Sonny Melton of Big Sandy, who was shot and killed in the mass shooting in Las Vegas Sunday night.
Little did McMillan know at that time that his son was among those shot.
His son, Jason McMillan is in a hospital in Las Vegas recovering from two gunshot wounds to the chest that have left him in serious but stable condition.
Jason McMillan now lives in California and is employed with law enforcement there and was attending the country music festival along with thousands of others when he was shot.
Brother Greg Hauck of the Big Sandy Christian Outreach Center told WENK/WTPR this morning that Mike McMillan “is an amazing guy. He volunteers here about every day. He was here all day yesterday and we all prayed for Sonny Melton and his family.”
Later that night, McMillan called Hauck and told him he had just been notified that his son was among those injured in the shootings. “He told me, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be watching my son heal or burying my son.’”
Hauck said the law enforcement agency where his son works contacted him and is paying McMillan’s expenses round trip so that he can be with his son in the hospital in Las Vegas. “Mike left about 1 a.m. last night for Las Vegas,” Hauck said.
Hauck said McMillan told him he son had been shot twice in the chest, with one bullet going all the way through his body. The other bullet lodged in his lungs.
McMillan belongs to The Rock Church–The Church of God Prophecy in Big Sandy, which is raising donations for both the McMillan and Melton families.
