Union City, Tenn.—A man with active warrants on him tried to outrun Union City Police on his bicycle and on foot early this morning. He then scuffled with officers as they tried to cuff him, prompting police to taser and mace him during the arrest.

David Webster, age 55, 218 E. Gibbs St., Union City, was charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest, public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, aggravated assault and vandalism and is incarcerated in the Obion County Jail.

Officers spotted Webster riding his bike on Melrose; they pulled beside him and told him to stop, at which time he tried to outrun them on his bike. Officers cut him off and he jumped off his bike and ran around the house at 722 Melrose. When he ran back to the front, officers warned him to stop and when he didn’t, he was tasered twice to no effect, according to the police report.

When he turned to face officers, he was sprayed with mace, then tried to run off again. He was taken to ground by officers and continued to fight while they were cuffing him. According to the report, he kicked officers twice and officers tasered him in drive stun mode five times before they were able to cuff him.

During a search of his person, officers found a meth pipe and smelled a strong odor of alcohol. One of the officer’s uniforms was torn in the scuffle.
