Big Sandy, Tenn.—The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating extreme vandalism to the McRae’s Chapel Outdoorsman’s Baptist Church in Big Sandy over the weekend.
Church members are still conducting inventory and assessing all the damage today, according to Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher.
Christopher said the vandalism occurred Saturday and church members found one of their buildings completely trashed when they arrived for worship Sunday morning. The church is located at 1555 Sulphur Creek Rd.
Burglaries at two residences on Sulphur Creek Rd. also were reported on Saturday night and all of the property taken has been recovered. Christopher said stolen from the residences were two four-wheelers and a golf cart.
Christopher told WENK/WTPR this morning that one of the buildings at the church was completely trashed. “Nothing appears to be taken, but they just tore up the place. The church has two buildings and all the damage was to the back building, where they also hold services.”
He said vandals broke the glass out of the windows, broke doors, threw food from the kitchen all over, ransacked the children’s play area and broke and scattered their toys and belongings.
Christopher said the vandals also tore up American flags, tore up song books and destroyed the sound system.
“They just tore up everything. They took bags of sugar and just threw the sugar all over and took soda pop and sprayed it all over everything. It’s just a real mess,” Christopher said.
“Hopefully, we can find who did this as soon as possible,” he said.
