Hal Holbrook Retires “Mark Twain Tonight”

Huntingdon, Tenn.–Hal Holbrook has announced the retirement of his “Mark Twain Tonight!” show after more than 60 years. Holbrook has a part-time home in McLemoresville, which was the hometown of his wife, Dixie Carter, who died in 2010. Carter was a fellow actor and The Dixie Center for the Performing Arts in Huntingdon was named for her.
Holbrook has performed “Mark Twain Tonight” at The Dixie on numerous occasions and a museum at The Dixie is dedicated to both Carter and Holbrook.
“I have thought about this quietly for a long time. I know it must end, this long effort to do a good job. I have served my trade, gave it my all, heart and soul, as a dedicated actor can. That’s about as much as people in my profession can hope,” Holbrook said.
“I plan to keep working in film and TV with anyone who will have me. The second part of my memoirs still need a polishing. And I know I can enjoy more time in the home that my beautiful late wife and I shared for so many happy years,” he said.
