Greenfield, Tenn.—What began as theft of a vehicle from McKenzie ended up with a Greenfield man in jail after a short crime spree that ended in him arrested on numerous charges. And more charges are still to come.
Melvin Lance Donnell of 143 Griffin St., was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, violation of implied consent and driving on a suspended license.
The incident began around 5 p.m. Tuesday when the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the McKenzie Police to be on the lookout for a 1998 red Ford Ranger stolen from McKenzie. Police said the stolen vehicle could be en route to a residence in Greenfield.
According to Weakley County Sheriff’s Captain Randall McGowan, a call was received at 5:20 p.m. from the Little General in Gleason reporting that a man driving a red Ford Ranger had left without paying for $38 in gas, stole some beer from the store and was intoxicated.
At 5:25 p.m., the vehicle was involved in a wreck with injuries at the intersection of Greenfield Hwy. 54 and Liberty Rd., McGowan said. A caller at the scene told police that the driver of the red Ford Ranger had stolen a bicycle from the scene and left and he had a dog with him. The caller said the suspect also had taken the cell phone from the person in the other vehicle that was involved in the wreck.
McGowan said deputies caught up with Donnell near the intersection of Lower Sharon Rd. and Greenfield Hwy. 54.
The McKenzie Police Department will be filing further charges against Donnell.
