Union City, Tenn.—A Union City man who reportedly stole items from a home while children were home alone at the residence was arrested by police early Tuesday morning.
Bobby McGinnis, age 39, of 625 N. First St., was charged with theft over $1,000 and driving on a revoked license.
Neighbors called police to report that a man was going inside a residence and behind a residence on Gibbs St., taking items. They described him as a white male, bald, wearing jeans and a t-shirt and driving a blue Volvo. They said the trunk and hood of his car were open.
Children in the home said the man had asked for water to help with his car and they had filled two jugs with water for him. They said when they got on the bus for school the man was still there and that a friend on the bus said they saw him walking back and forth through the yard and carrying a bucket to his car.
Police found McGinnis at his home, standing by the car, with the items nearby on the street. The items included a Duralast battery and a bucket full of copper wire. McGinnis told police he only asked the children for water and did not take anything else but the water. McGinnis was read his Miranda rights and taken to jail.
Both parents were reportedly at work when the incident occurred.
