Murray Payroll Tax One Step Closer

Murray, Ky.—A one percent payroll tax on Murray citizens is another step closer following last night’s vote by Murray City Council. Once again, council was split 6-6 and Mayor Jack Rose cast the tie-breaking vote.
The tax ordinance requires one more reading before it is enacted.
The tax was amended before the first vote following a proposal from Councilman Jason Pittman. He moved to include a clause that would lock in the new tax rate for three years.
The payroll tax would affect everyone working in Murray, including those who work part-time.
Voting in favor of the tax were Wesley Bolin, Dan Miller, Jason Pitman, Jane Shoemaker, Robert Billington Jr. and Johnny Bohannon. Voting no are Jeremy Bell, Linda Cherry, Danny Hudspetch, John Mark Roberts, Burton Young and Pat Scott.
Meanwhile, strong opposition is growing and petitions are being circulated in Murray which call for a vote by citizens on the payroll tax issue.
