Benton County, Tenn.—A Benton County woman was killed and the other driver in critical condition after they crashed head-on Sunday afternoon on Hwy. 70 near New Johnsonville. The Benton County Rescue Squad extricated the other driver—and his dog—from his vehicle.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Brad Wilbanks, Sandra Fullerton, age 58, of Camden, was killed in the accident. Gary Kee, age 62, also of Camden, was taken to the Dickson Trauma Center and was listed in critical condition after the crash.
Kee was extricated from his vehicle by the Benton County Rescue Squad. Kee could not be airlifted from the scene because of the weather and was taken by ambulance to Dickson.
Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher said plans are to transport Kee to the Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.
Christopher said Kee’s dog was trapped under the dash board in the crash and he was rescued by the Rescue Squad. “The dog is o.k. He’s being taken care of by the animal control officer until the family can come pick him up,” he said.
The highway was shut down for more than an hour following the crash.
According to Wilbanks, Ms. Fullerton was westbound on Hwy. 70 and Kee was eastbound on the highway when Fullerton crossed the centerline, striking Kee. The accident was investigated by Trooper Garrett Flannery.
