‘Newspaper Wars’, Camp Tyson On Tap At Meeting

Paris, Tenn.—You can hear about the ‘Newspaper Wars’ of the past and have the opportunity to purchase books about Camp Tyson at this week’s Henry County Historical Society meeting, set for 6 p.m. Thursday, August 3, at the Paris-Henry County Heritage Center.
Longtime newspaperman Jimmy Williams will present an entertaining and informative program entitled “Newspaper wars.” He will discuss rivalries between newspaper publishers that occurred over many years in Paris, Tennessee. Williams, The Paris Post-Intelligencer’s production superintendent and long-time “Garden Path” columnist, was inducted into the Tennessee Press Association’s 50-Year Club in 2016. In 1956, he began working at The P-I, owned by his grandparents, W. Percy and Lucy Cowan Williams, as one of several hot-type Linotype operators.
The Society has purchased a limited number of Shannon McFarlin’s book, As If They Were Ours: The Story of Camp Tyson, America’s Only Barrage Balloon Training Facility. Copies may be purchased at the meeting for $15.95 each. Please pay with exact change or with a check made out to the Henry County Historical Society.
Following the program, the Society will conduct a short business meeting to review recent changes to the bylaws and elect officers for the new fiscal year. If any member is interested in the office of President, Vice President, Vice President and Program Chair, Board Member, Secretary, Treasurer, or Secretary-Treasurer, please contact David Webb at webbdw@hotmail.com.
Members and visitors will view new Heritage Center exhibits and some additional artifacts recently acquired by the Society from the Walter Inman Estate.
Individual annual dues of $10 will be collected at the meeting.
The public is invited to attend.
