Murray Moves Closer To Payroll Tax

Murray, Ky.—With Mayor Jack Rose breaking a 6-6 tie vote, the Murray City Council Thursday night voted to draft an ordinance to implement a one percent payroll tax on anyone who works in Murray.
The controversial measure could be enacted as soon as January 1 of 2018. The ordinance will face two readings before it is enacted.
Thursday night’s vote authorizes the city attorney to draft the ordinance. The issue has been a heated one, with proponents saying a payroll tax would produce more revenue that the current city sticker system. Opponents say the tax is unfair and amounts to taxation without representation.
In discussion before the vote, council decided not to pursue a net profit tax.
Voting against the payroll tax were Jeremy Bell, Linda Cherry, Danny Hudspeth, John Mark Roberts, Pat Scott and Burton Young. Voting for it were Robert Billington, Johnny Bohannon, Wesley Bolin, Dan Miller, Jason Pittman, Jane Shoemaker and Mayor Rose.
