Marshall County, Ky.—A missing Mayfield woman and her nine-month-old grandchild are lucky to be alive after they were rescued from an overturned vehicle early this morning. The two had been reported missing Sunday.
Kayla L. Belcher, age 35, and her grandson John Luke Sheridan were reported missing Sunday after they were reported missing by family members. They had left Mayfield to visit a relative near Kirksey, but never arrived. They had not been seen or heard from since Sunday afternoon, according to the alert that was originally sent out by the Graves County Sheriff’s Office.
Belcher and her grandson were trapped in her SUV for several hours before they were discovered. The SUV was not easily visible from the road way.
The West Marshall Fire Department responded to a report of the SUV overturned around 4 a.m. today. The vehicle drove into a ravine off of Kentucky Hwy. 402 at the Graves-Marshall County line.
First responders freed the pair from the vehicle. Belcher was flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind., and the little boy was treated and released from the Marshall County Hospital ER.
According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Belcher’s vehicle left the left side of the road, striking an embankment before it overturned in a deep ravine. Deputies swept the area using updated latitude and longitude estimates of Belcher’s last known location.
West Marshall Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Benton County Police, Marshal County deputies and Marshall County EMS.
