Extreme Heat Doesn’t Deter Megamarathoners

Gleason, Tenn.—Matt Collins of New York made it as far as Gleason yesterday in the Last Annual Vol State Road Race, a grueling 300 mile megamarathon that takes runners from Dorena, Missouri, to Sand Mountain in Castle Rock, Ga. Other runners made it as far as McKenzie last night.
As you can see in the photo, Collins and others were greeted in Gleason with a sign that reads, “Tater Town Welcomes You, Vol State Runners”.
The megamarathon started Thursday with a ferry ride across the Mississippi into Tennessee and then onto the running. Heat index yesterday reached 110 degrees and many of the runners appeared to wait out the heat of the day for running through the evening hours.
There is a 10-day time limit for the runners to reach their final destination. Long-distance runners from across the U.S. are competing in the race. You can follow them at www.tinyurl.com/volstate2017.
