Lee Academy, Kiwanis In Partnership For Kids

Lee Academy, Kiwanis In Partnership For Kids
Paris, Tenn.—Lee Academy for the Arts and the Lakeway Kiwanis Club of Paris have announced a partnership to enrich the lives of children in the area by providing opportunities for involvement in the community and participation in creative activities.
The Lakeway Kiwanis Club was chartered on April 14, 1972 and currently has around 40 active members. “Our main concern is kids and we keep our funds local for helping local children,” according to Andy Hooper, club treasurer and the last remaining charter member.

The Club chooses one organization each year to get the majority of the funds and Hooper said the Lakeway Kiwanis Club has donated more to the Lee Academy than any other local organization. Among other local recipients of Kiwanis donations have been Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, HC Speech Team, HC Band, Real Hope, Special Olympics, HC Soccer, and Boys State. Lee Academy for the Arts has been the recipient for these funds two times.
A portion of the current donation to Lee Academy is being used for a workshop opportunity in the 2017 Summer Series. During Sketching Camp, a five-day workshop from July 10-14, children will learn basic techniques and practice these skills each day by sketching live animals. On the last day, the students will take a field trip to the Tennessee Safari Park via a West Tennessee Motor Coach bus from Paris to Alamo, TN. According to Sara Simonis, Lee Academy Director of Marketing, this opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the generous donations from the Lakeway Kiwanis.
Hooper recalled the history of Lakeway Kiwanis: “We started out selling concessions at the Fish Fry parade for our fundraising and in the late 70’s purchased our own concession trailer. As the Fish Fry got more and more competitive we took over the craft fair at the lake each September and started the Mexican Dinner in October of each year. These two functions have been our mainstream and we usually make at least $10,000 or more for donating each year.”
