Dyer County, TN – The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office is saddened to inform our community that the Dyer County Medical Examiner’s Office has reported the first heat-related death of the summer today. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by extreme heat, particularly to vulnerable populations.
Sheriff Jeff Box urges all residents to take necessary precautions during this heat wave, especially those who are older or suffer from health conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and heart trouble. Our hearts go out to the family affected by this unfortunate event, and we want to ensure that everyone is equipped to protect themselves as temperatures rise.
Safety Tips to Stay Cool and Healthy:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, which can lead to dehydration.
2. Limit Outdoor Activities: If possible, avoid strenuous outdoor work or exercise during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
3. Seek Cool Places: Spend time in air-conditioned spaces when possible. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider visiting a public library or other public space with air conditioning.
4. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing. This will help keep your body cool.
5. Check on Neighbors: Check in with family, friends, and neighbors who may be at higher risk for heat-related illnesses, especially older adults.
6. Be Aware of Symptoms: Familiarize yourself with the signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, weakness, cool, pale skin, fainting, and nausea. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
As your Sheriff, my priority is the health and safety of our community. Please heed these warnings and take the necessary steps to stay safe during this heat wave.
For any emergency situations, please do not hesitate to call 911. Stay safe, Dyer County!
