Union City, Tenn.-Chanyah Lipford and Cedrion Cook can still wear all the purple and gold in their closets.

The two Union City High School track standouts will keep the same color scheme on the next level after both signed college scholarships with Bethel University Friday.

One day after making their college choice official, Lipford and Cook qualified for this year’s Class A State Championships with top performances in the West Sectionals in Memphis.

Lipford, who also made the state her junior year in the 4×200 relay, punched her ticket for the 4×100 and 4×200 relays next week with a strong showing in Saturday’s sectionals.

She also is the fastest Lady Tornado runner in the 100 since 2006, according to MileSplit.

Cook, who finished seventh in the 3,200 in last year’s state meet and was also member of the 4×800 relay team that came in third, gained a state bid this year in both the 3200 and as a member of the 4×400 relay team Saturday.

He posted the best time of any Union City runner in the past 15 years in the 3200 earlier this year.

UC head coach Wade Maddox said Cook has been on the Bethel program’s radar since his freshman year, according to long-time Wildcat coach Brandon Kilburn. Maddux also said Lipford had drawn interest from a couple of other college programs before deciding on BU.

“He (Kilburn) told me he’s been watching Cedrion throughout his high school running days,” Maddox said.

“I think this is a good place for both of them to continue their running careers. Coach Kilburn has gotten some really good ‘finds’ the last few years, and the Bethel program is trending in the right direction, I believe.

“I think they are ready to take the next step.”
