Herman Jackson, Jr.

Former Henry County Executive, Herman Jackson, Jr., 92, of Paris, Tennessee, passed away at his residence, Thursday, May 5, 2022.

Mr. Jackson was born Saturday, September 21, 1929, in Henry County, Tennessee, to Herman Jackson, Sr. and Lois Richee Jackson, who both preceded him in death.

Mr. Jackson was a graduate of E.W. High School, attended Murray State University, Bethel College and the New York University, School of Retailing. He was also a 1956 graduate of Dale Carnegie and attended U.T. Center for Government Training. Herman was a member of East Wood Church of Christ since 1955, serving as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher and in many other capacities.

Herman was a U.S. Army Veteran, 101st Airborne Division serving in 308th Replacement Depot, Sonthofen, Germany, 1951-1953.

Jackson worked several jobs in the community, salesclerk at J.C. Penney’s, manager trainee of the Charles Dept. Store and for Burnett Shoe Store where he was manager and buyer for 29 years. He was also a part owner of Edwards Shoe Store. Herman was a board member of TN Children’s Home, the Jr. Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Commerce. He was a member since 1959 of the Paris Rotary Club and former President.

Herman also served local government as Henry County Executive for 12 years, serving on numerous committees and councils, including the Henry County Airport, Technology Center Advisory, Henry County Health, Chamber Board of Directors, and the Industrial Board. He was Henry County Magistrate for 8 years and County Judge Pro-Tem for 2 years under Judge Harold Jackson.

Mr. Jackson’s numerous achievements and awards include: Chamber Man of the Year 1971, Retailer of the Year 1980-1981, Executive of the Year 1993, Loyal Patriot of Henry County and Colonel Aide de Camp which can only be requested by a member of the TN General Assembly and was presented to him by former Governor the late Ned Ray McWherter. He married Janice Hart Jackson, Friday, July 3, 1953.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, daughter Jill (Mike) Hutcherson, of Topeka, Kansas, son Don (Sharon) Jackson, of Round Rock, Texas, grandchildren: Brittany (Scott) Jackson, Morgan Hutcherson and Sheldon Jackson and great-grandchildren: Vance Scott Jackson and James Harlan Jackson.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2022, at McEvoy Funeral Home with Bro. John Dale officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to service from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Monday.

Pallbearers will be Everett Moody, Camron Hart, Bill DeWees, Lavelle Davidson, Ricky Rhodes and Mike McDaniel.
