Camden, Tenn.–Dr. Randy Shannon was sworn in the Interim Benton County Mayor this morning at a ceremony at the courthouse. Shannon will replace Mayor Brett Lashlee who is serving a stint with the Tennessee Army National Guard.

Shannon was appointed to the position by the County Commission Monday evening. He was sworn in by Benton County General Sessions Judge John Whitworth.

Shannon said to RadioNWTN Friday, “It is with great pleasure that I assume the role of interim mayor for Benton County. My primary focus will be to work to move Benton County forward.” Dr. Shannon currently is principal at the Frank P. Lashlee Career Center in Camden.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Lashlee said, “Congratulations to Dr. Randy Shannon who was elected as Interim Mayor during my departure on military service and deployment. It is a tribute to our democratic process and to our county to have such distinguished representation in him and Judge Paul Summers to choose from.

“Dr. Shannon will do a fine job in my absence, and I will be at his disposal for information, guidance, and institutional knowledge of the projects and progress we have been making over the past few years. This is a historic event not only in our county, but our state as well and yet an exciting time for our county. We will pass a sound and fiscally responsible budget next week. Our revenues have been at a record pace. Economic, Commercial, and Residential Development has been steady and good things looming on our economic horizon. Truly a positive future we face after decades of rural hardship!
“I am proud of all who were involved in seeing to the best interest of our county and our citizens benefit. Godspeed Dr. Shannon!”
