UC Schools To Remain On Current Schedule After Fall Break

uc-schools

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Things will remain status quo for Union City Schools students when they return from Fall Break next week.

Director of Schools Wes Kennedy has announced the UC School System will remain on Level 2.51 for the “foreseeable future,” continuing a mostly in-person learning setting that was implemented a little over a month ago.

Students in PreK-6th grade will still attend classes on their respective campuses, five days a week. Those in Grades 7-12 will go to traditional classes Monday through Thursday, with Fridays reserved for Distance Learning as well as appointment-scheduled tutoring.

“We remain vigilant with an eye on all the COVID numbers and other data we receive on a daily basis,” Kennedy said. “We certainly hope not to have to go back to Level 3, and we’re keeping a watchful eye on the recent significant increase of cases in Obion County.

“If that trend continues, we’ll certainly reevaluate our situation. For right now, though, I’m comfortable and truly believe it’s best for all our stakeholders — and that includes faculty, students and administration — that we continue with Level 2.51.”

Students return to classes next week at UC Schools following a three-day break, Wednesday thru Friday. The first nine weeks or one quarter of the 2020-21 school year ends Oct. 15.

Kennedy said he is hopeful that ultimately all students can return to everyday classroom learning — though there is no timetable for that move.

The declining number of Distance Learners could be a good sign, though.

“We’ve had a number of parents elect to send their students back to school after they originally chose to distance learn,” the head of schools claimed. “We’ve believed and continue to do so that the best learning environment is in-person with our students and teachers with the obvious precautions taken.

“Hopefully, our Distance Learners numbers continue to decline and the number of COVID cases do the same. That’s the best way we can ensure we return to true normalcy.”

As part of the Level 2.51 plan, the following will remain in place:

  • Temperature checks will still be performed when each student either boards a bus or enters a campus building. Face masks will be required on buses and when social distancing is not possible in in-person settings as parts of the new plan.
  • Frequently-touched surfaces will be disinfected between class transitions and shared objects will also be disinfected as best as possible. Hand sanitizer will be readily available in each classroom, as will disinfectant wipes.
  • Seating charts for each class will still be kept in order to contact trace, should there be a case of coronavirus or an outbreak.
  • Visitors to each school must still have an appointment and their temperatures will be taken upon entering the building.
  • Free breakfast and lunch will be served to all UC Schools students until the end of the first semester. Meals will be eaten in either the cafeterias at half capacity or in classrooms on each campus. Meals for the weekends — free of charge — will be sent home for every student on the last day students are in class for the week.

All of the particulars of the Level 2.51 plan can be found on the school website, tornadotouch.net.
