UC Elementary Students Learn About Themselves, Inside & Out

uces-first-grade

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Young students at Union City Elementary School have been learning all about themselves in recent weeks — both inside and out.

As a part of the CKLA curriculum human body study, first-graders in Mallory Powers’ and Jennifer Durham’s Knowledge classes have engaged in a two-part lesson that has proven to be both informative and fun.

The first half of the study introduced the fundamental parts and functions of the five body systems: skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory and nervous.

The second half focused on care and maintenance of the human body.

Students learned how germs can cause disease and also discovered how to help stop the spread of germs. They were introduced to Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur, whose discoveries aided in the cure of diseases.

The classes were then taught five important keys to good health — eating well, exercise, good sleep habits, cleanliness and regular checkups.

Powers and Durham provided the students with a fun hands-on activity following the study to review what they’d learned about the five body systems.

Thanks to unique “What’s Inside Me” aprons, donated to first-grade classrooms by the DonorsChoose program and Tyson Foods, they were able to turn what they’d learned about the body’s system into identifying where organs are located in the body.

Powers said the students enthusiastically embraced the dual lesson and were eager to participate in the follow-up review.

“This unit of study has proven to be a favorite among our students,” Powers said. “The information they retain about the body systems is impressive, and they love to share what they’ve learned in class.

“The addition of the human body aprons just seem to help them love this study even more!”
