"Paws & Prisoners" Introduced In Stewart Co.

Dover, Tenn.–The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office has “unleashed“ a new inmate program: “Paws and Prisoners” in which selected inmates receive training and instructions on dealing with dogs that have behavior problems and issues which prevent them from being adopted.
The instruction comes from the local Humane Society and the sheriff office’s own K-9 Officers.
Under the program, the inmates work with the dogs twice daily to change their behavior and correct issues they have. Once the dogs are ready to be adopted, they are returned to the Humane Society and then other dogs are brought to the inmates.
Kennels have been built on available space at the Detention Center and the inmates are responsible for feeding, bathing and cleaning the kennels.
Sheriff Frankie Gray said this has been a community effort in that the concrete for the kennels were donated by Curtis Wallace, the wire kennels were donated by Paula Hall, the metal for the roofing was donated by Randy Wallace of Wallace Supply.”
Also the sheriff’s office would like to thank Lisa Sagley from the Humane Society, and Susan Baumann from Lil’ Red Wag Inn.
Gray said, “This program has three goals: #1 It helps to reduce the burden on the Humane Society. #2 It allows the inmates to build time credit and build skills for possible jobs when they are released. #3 The main goal is that it provides treatment and love to these animals that have been abused, neglected or abandoned and help them find a good home. The Sheriff’s Office hopes that this program will provide more support to the ongoing efforts to put an animal shelter within our county.”
Anyone who would like to help donate to the efforts to establish an animal shelter can donate by: Sending a check to the Humane Society Dover, 533 Honey Fork Road, Indian Mound Tennessee 37079. Any questions or concerns please contact Tom Coulter @ 627-4144.
