“Road Closed Signs” Are There For A Reason

With the floodwaters causing road closures and even the closing of the Cairo Bridge, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet continues to have problems with motorists ignoring ‘road closed’ signs—or even worse, knocking them over or stealing them, which is causing even more of a hazard for other motorists.
Kentucky Cabinet District 1 posted a photo on Facebook which shows a driver of a Krispy Kreme truck who drove past multiple “Water Over Road” and “Road Closed” signs along KY 365 in Crittenden County and his Krispy Kreme truck ended up floating in the floodwaters.
According to the post, the driver did make it out o.k.
Kentucky Cabinet District 1 has also posted photos of signs that have been run over by motorists who continue to drive through the ‘road closed’ areas. Also, “Road Closed” signs have been stolen or thrown into ditches. This activity “leaves flooded roadways unmarked, creating a hazardous situation for drivers who may come along later,” officials pointed out.
“We’ve also had a number of instances where our crews have put out signs, only to get a call 30 minutes later that the signs have been removed,” they said.
“Road Closed and Water Over Road signs are put up for a reason,” according to their post. “Please pay close attention when you are driving area highways and roads this week as floodwaters are going to stick around.
“We’ve also had issues with people stealing/moving/removing/vandalizing signs marking flooded areas. If you see someone other than a KY Transportation Employee moving signs, please get a description of the vehicle involved, and a license number, then report it immediately to your local 911 call center.”
